WHAT: Please call Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety at 613-991-2924 and ask him to release information to Francisco’s family, pay for transportation costs, and commit to ending detentions.

WHEN: Thursday, March 24

HOW: Sample phone script below.

Francisco’s death followed that of 64 year old Burundian refugee Melkioro Gahungu, who committed suicide in immigration detention where he had been jailed without charges or trial for at least a year maybe more.

Francisco and Melkioro should not be dead. We need answers. We need an end to immigration detention.

Sample phone script

Minister Goodale,

I’m calling you today regarding the death of Francisco Javier Romero Astorga in immigration detention on March 13th.

No one from the federal government or from Canada Border Services Agency has called the family to tell them what happened and why he died.

I’m joining Francisco’s family call in demanding you release this information to them and that the government pay for transportation costs to repatriate Francisco’s body to Chile.

I’m also asking you to commit to ending immigration detention. 14 people have died in immigration detention since 2000, 7 in just three years.

Families need to know why their loved ones are dying and you must do all you can to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
